Designer Luncheon: Fa-La-La-In-Love with Architectural Lighting by Acuity Brands

Last week, on December 12th, we hosted our final luncheon of 2018! Can you believe this was our 5th one?! This Holiday Edition Designer Luncheon featured the architectural lines from Acuity Brands with guest speakers Susie Brown and Guy Rojo, both West Regional Specification Sales Managers, at The Patio Marketplace at Axiom in the UTC La Jolla area.

Along with all the festive decorations and candy cane favors, we continued the tradition of inviting our guests to get into the holiday spirit by donating canned goods to contribute to our Annual Food Drive to benefit the Jacob and Cushman’s Food Bank.

Susie Brown began the presentation off with the Chisel by Mark Lighting. Mark Lighting, known for high-performance architectural solutions, has continued to expand their offerings. With the multiple sizes, various patterns and textures, and the ability to specify the directional gradients, Chisel is the perfect fixture to use when looking to add an extra design element. It’s ideal for offices, classrooms, and medical spaces with grid ceilings. In addition, the Chisel has tunable white capabilities and can be programmed with nLight controls to mimic natural daylight and circadian rhythm patterns.

Another new product that was introduced was the Indy L-Series Low Profile recessed downlight. The L Series has a lot going for it already with exceptional efficacy of 128 lumens per watt, patent-pending hyperbolic reflectors with a 45-degree visual cutoff, field-replaceable reflectors, and future-proof design with maintenance from below capabilities. But now you can get it with a 2” plenum clearance, making it possible to use in projects with minimal ceiling space! And since it’s available in output packages up to 4800 lumens, Indy delivers on a very versatile luminaire.

The team also exhibited the new EVO Special Applications Series by Gotham lighting has expanded on their line of special application downlights. In addition to their non-conductive shower downlights, Gotham now offers Evo specially engineered for surgical suites, MRI, patient rooms, clean rooms, and food service. They also thought of projects needing more dynamic elements the Evo Architainment Color. With DMX control this Evo provides saturated and pastel dynamic RGBW color changing options. Now projects that desire a themed look can achieve it without breaking the budget on expensive theatrical lighting.

Finally, we were “teased” with a pending launch of a brand new series from Peerless Lighting called Venue!  Specifically crafted for open and deconstructed ceilings, the Peerless Venue defines spaces where people gather, collaborate and thrive!  Be on the lookout for an announcement for a special San Diego launch event for this unique product family from Peerless in early 2019!

Four lucky customers who participated in giving were randomly selected in our raffle and received Visa gift cards and SDLA Yeti Tumblers! Congrats to Herbert Cheung and Erik Sadlicki of Dersch Design & Engineering, Jocelyn Zepeda of Misean Inc., and Cait Marolf of Ware Malcomb San Diego.

Make sure to mark your calendars for our upcoming events. 2019 is going to be filled with more product launches, SDLA Academy courses, AIA CEUS, Manufacturer Visits and of course Designer Luncheons with some of our New and Legacy manufacturers. Keep an eye out for more information on our Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, or contact Amanda Ivko at amandai@sdltg.com for more information.

LIGHTSHOW WEST 2018: OFF TO SIN CITY TO SEE THE BRIGHT LIGHTS

On October 17th, our team hosted a group of customers to a day and night out in good ole Las Vegas where this year’s Lightshow West took place. With over 200 exhibitors and 20 of them being our manufacturer’s participating, there was a lot to see in a short amount of time!

Lightshow West has become the largest West Coast destination for specifiers to see the upcoming lighting trends, and see products from the leading commercial, architectural, high-end decorative and controls manufacturers.

After the quick flight, the day consisted of stopping by our hotel, The Cosmopolitan, grabbing a quick bite to eat at Block 16 Urban Food Hall and then heading straight to the convention center to check out the show. Some noteworthy mentions were the new product announcements such as the Venue by Peerless- this large-scale pendant comes in a concave or convex triangle, square or rectangular shape; available in 4 and 5-foot sizes! Perfect for large, open spaces! Bruck lighting announced their new line of wood fixtures, called the “WEP- Wood Eco Project” Series- made of Argentinian wood, the texture and flexibility of the wood veneer allows for unique shapes; along with the ability to specify the shades size and choose different interior and exterior colors, the customization truly makes each piece original. Lastly, but not least, Bartco exhibited their new wet-rated family called Fathom. This line consists of 8 products with sleek sealing hardware perfect for any outdoor application.  Our guests were thoroughly impressed with ALL our manufacturers’ booths and learned a lot from the time spent at the show!  A few even mentioned finding the perfect fixture for their next project!

Afterward, we enjoyed an indulgent dinner at Holstein’s consisting of big juicy burgers and creamy boozy milkshakes hosted by Acuity Brands! We continued the night with a ride on the Linq High Roller Ferris Wheel (where the highest point reaches 550ft), then landed at Harrah’s Piano Bar, hosted by Pinnacle Architectural Lighting.

To add a little fun, we challenged our guests to stop by each of our manufacturer’s booths; if they were able to complete this within the timeframe they were at the show, they would be entered in a raffle contest. As many completed the task, only two were lucky enough to win. Congrats to Jenny Oechel, of MPE Consulting, and Khris Tabaknek, of SmithGroup, for being our grand prize winners of the trip!

As everyone was heading to the airport to head back to good old San Diego, Brian stayed an extra day as there was another lighting show in town! Celebrating its 30th year, Live Design International, LDI, is the leading conference trade show for live design professionals. With over 400 exhibitors, the show consisted of the latest new tech and production equipment for international and live broadcast venues such as festivals, corporate events, theatre, concerts, clubs, theme parks, architainment, and houses of worships. Chauvet Professional, one of the main sponsors of the show and one of our valued manufacturers, did not disappoint with their massive display filled with incredible lighting! Over the convention, they featured the Maverick Storm 1 Wash. This IP65 rated RGBW LED is made of die-cast aluminum, has an insane light output of 6000 lumens and consists of a moving head- the first of its kind!

To learn more about the show or if you have any questions, about the mentioned manufacturers or want to know more about the show, contact Brian Rhea at brianr@sdltg.com.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year: LFI 2018 Recap

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and no, we’re not queuing the Christmas music. We’re talking about another exciting week at Light Fair International, which was hosted in the Windy City this year, Chicago, Illinois. The venue was incredible with plenty of space for manufacturers and vendors to show off their latest lighting and lighting control innovations. After attending this popular industry tradeshow for 10+ years, I can confidently say the booths this year were the best to date. Speaking of which, one of my favorite eye-catching displays was the all-new, dynamic color changing Rubik from Acuity Brands’ Mark Architectural Lighting.

IoT, The Internet of Things, was yet again a hot topic at LFI. Many of the manufacturers who were using the buzzword seemed to have different and varying capabilities with this innovation. It’s exciting to see so many follow in the footsteps of Acuity Brands, who we know was a pioneer in the IoT revolution.

I was pleasantly surprised that track lighting is back and it’s better than ever! Manufacturers, like XAL Move-It and Bruck Lighting Smart Track had sleek track systems on display, and PureEdge was showing off their incorporated Trueline look to create a mud-in track system.  I personally believe the versatility of track lighting, the sleek, minimalistic design, European inspiration are the large drivers for why this lighting solution is making a comeback!

Could you imagine a world where lights act as a means for disinfection? I saw this idea come to life at the Visa Lighting booth. In partnership with Vital Vio, Visa introduced their “Disinfecting Luminaires”. The LED technology protects environments from harmful bacteria by emitting a white light that is safe for both humans and animals.  Looking forward to sharing the technology with anyone and everyone in San Diego who is responsible for healthcare design!  Make sure you click on the Visa Lighting Link above for more information!

Another big play in the new products category was Horticultural Lighting.  Manufacturers like SpecGrade LED, Beghelli, and Sonaray all had new products on display. Horticultural lighting, although it has been around for a while, I feel is being taken to a whole new level with technological advancements through color, wavelength, product design, and placement.  And if you think everything you have learned about lighting for humans applies to horticultural lighting, I am quickly learning that is not true!  The terminology and science that is specific to growing plants is a whole new ballgame. The manufacturers I mentioned above have great resources to help us all learn the ins and outs of effective horticultural lighting!

Congratulations are in order for many of our manufacturers who brought their A game to LFI 2018. Alphabet Lighting won top honor with their “Most Innovative Product of the Year” award for its NU Vector Series!  Other winners were Mark Lighting Chisel, Juno FlexConnect and the SensorSwitch VLP App, who were all recognized as “best of” in their respective categories.  FlexConnect also won a “Design Excellence” award.  One of the coolest products I saw at the show was the digital tension system from TLS international. See the product in action here.

Finally, LFI has always been a great place to learn from some of the best in the industry.  Having my NCQLP LC Certification, I need continuing education credits to maintain the certification and to keep up with the fast-paced and innovative lighting landscape!  I was able to take a few classes to satisfy some continuing education credit needs, but more importantly, learn more about topics that are some of the most talked about in the industry today. We strive to be subject matter experts at SDLA so we can share the information we learn with our San Diego lighting colleagues!  Understanding continuing education is important for many, we offer classes at least once a month on a variety of topics through our SDLA Academy curriculum. A quick reminder that SDLA is also an AIA approved CEU provider so we are able to deliver AIA/HSW CEU presentations on-demand when the need for credits arise!

SDLA Academy: Networked Lighting Controls

The SDLA Academy recently held another successful premiere course for lighting and lighting controls training and education. On March 22nd, we hosted about 16 different electrical engineers, electrical contractors, and electrical distributors for the course, “nLight Networked Lighting Controls, What’s New?”, right here in our office! Those in attendance gained education and training on networked lighting control solutions and how they relate to Title 24 requirements, BMS integration, Demand Response, and IoT solutions. Today, lighting control knowledge is an absolute necessity for professionals to have due to the push in energy saving code requirements, and the increased desire of building owners to be more in tune with their buildings’ potential. Software Applications, like Space Utilization, Siteview Energy and Indoor Positioning have been developed to utilize the networked control sensor devices to pull data like occupancy status/history, light levels from standard nLight devices, energy metering from the integrated SVEM and indoor location from Atrius enabled fixtures. Our training and hands-on demonstrations displayed the many ways available to design and utilize controls systems in order to give our clients an innovative approach to lighting their spaces.

Our attendees were able to get hands-on interaction with nLight® and nLight®Air of Acuity Brands, a digital control system that provides a wide range of control from small, individual rooms to multi-story buildings and has full read/write BACnet/IP BMS integration capabilities. Keep an eye out for the Summer release of the fully networked nLight AIR wireless control system that will provide the ability to have interior/exterior and wired/wireless lighting controls under one system. These Title 24 compliant systems were on display with another controls lines from Acuity including Fresco™, a high- performance architectural lighting control system that is bringing dynamic spaces to life. The Fresco system has the ability to control nLight, dimming panels, DMX (including RDM), Dali, and tunable white fixtures. All of these systems meet the needs of Title 24 while simultaneously addressing the “requirements of today’s architectural and dynamic lighting environments.”

Attendees not only had the chance to experience these innovative systems and enjoy a delicious lunch, but they also had the chance to win a very fine SDLA jacket from our event giveaway. Congrats to our winner, Kyle Knoakes!

Want a chance to experience these systems first hand? Email me at jeretc@sdltg.com for more information or to set up your demonstration today! Also, don’t miss out on our next course with the SDLA Academy, Visual Lighting Software Half-Day Training, which will be hosted on April 19th!

It’s That Time of Year – Our Summer Spec Product Show!

Summer Spec Product Show. Last week we had a blast hosting our Summer Spec Product Show,
where we demonstrated how to mix cutting-edge technology with architectural and decorative solutions that also meet local codes. Thanks to everyone who was involved – we had a great turn out from the specifications community, and the nine manufacturers who participated in our event impressed the crowd with their products and knowledge.

We also held two CEU courses (one being AIA accredited) during the program.  Our first course was an AIA accredited CEU presentation, lead by yours truly (Brian Rhea). The presentation was called Specifying Architectural Lighting and Controls with Confidence. Over lunch, we covered everything from specification language for LED products, all the way to reviewing design challenges and problem-solving.

And back by popular demand… Danny Cortez led his infamous training on Title 24 2016. He covered the changes in the 2016 commercial code and made sure attendees had the information needed to ensure their projects comply.  It was all a great series of events blending learning with thoughtful discussion.

A big thank you to all our wonderful attendees for helping make our event so successful and the best one to date!  Shout out to Acuity Brands, A-Light, Artemide, Lauren Illumination, LEDRA Brands, Pinnacle Lighting, Spec Grade, Targetti | DuraLamp and UltraLights for their time, product displays and insightful information.

Stay tuned for announcements on future events we will be
holding.  I can assure you, you won’t want to miss what we have planned for our valued partners!  Also, be sure to follow us on social media (Facebook and Instagram) for updates on future events, training and education, and product updates.
